Insights from the EARMA Conference
More than 1,800 research managers and administrators gathered in the historic city of Utrecht for the EARMA Annual Conference 2026, held from May 5–7. Over three inspiring days, participants came together to learn, connect, and exchange ideas.
Under the theme “Empowering Research Managers and Administrators as Leaders for Impact,” the conference highlighted the diverse ways in which RMAs contribute to shaping research environments—whether by leading teams, influencing strategy, or driving meaningful change across institutions. The event brought together professionals from over 40 countries, creating a vibrant space for sharing experiences and exploring current trends in research management.
The programme offered a rich mix of workshops, keynotes, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. With so many parallel sessions, choosing which ones to attend was often a challenge—catchy titles, renowned speakers, or prestigious institutions frequently helped guide our decisions.
Among the highlights were practical insights into best practices for managing the transition from pre-award to post-award phases, as well as more unconventional approaches—such as Norwegian experiences with taking researchers out of the office to help them focus on proposal writing. Another engaging session featured project managers from a Twinning project, who reflected on the mutual benefits of these partnerships: while widening partners gain valuable expertise, established institutions benefit from fresh perspectives, innovative approaches, and expanded professional networks.
Overall, the conference provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen connections within the international RMA community and to reflect on our evolving roles as facilitators, collaborators, and leaders in research.
